Marsiling Secondary School has grown from strength to strength since the school started in 2000. After receiving the Development Award (National Education) in 2005, we continued to make progress in 2006 when we were awarded the Academic Value-added (Bronze) Award and the Sustained Achievement Award (Uniformed Groups). In addition, we were also awarded the Lotus Award (highest level) in the Green Audit Award organised by the Singapore Environment Council.

For the past few years, we saw through a number of initiatives from the MOE to get schools to re-focus on what we do in education. To cater to the diverse needs and interests of students, and to challenge those who have the aptitude to progress further, MOE has encouraged schools to open up more pathways and opportunities. These include allowing students to take subjects offered in the more demanding stream, offering more diverse and interesting modules for students in N(T) stream, and developing niche areas within the school. To ensure that students in financial hardship are not deprived of the opportunity to learn, MOE has also downloaded funds to schools to provide subsidy for computer ownership and enrichment programmes.

In response to these new changes, the staff of the school came together last year to review the strategic thrusts and school values. The results of the review are streamlining of the strategic thrusts and addition of 2 more values to the existing 5.

New Strategic Thrusts
• Enriching Curriculum
• Character Development
• Quality Relationship
• Conducive Learning Environment

School Values
• Perseverance
• Responsibility
• Integrity
• Diligence
• Enterprise
• Care (New)
• Respect (New)

As one of the 29 MOE-selected schools to carry out curriculum innovations, we will be implementing the Environment Education Module (EEM) this year. The EEM is a 15-week module that integrates science and geography, covering topics like air, water and energy. It is conducted through a problem-based approach, which we hope will set a more authentic context for learning.

The implementation of EEM is also part of our school-wide effort in environment education. The other approaches include enhancing student’s learning through projects and competitions, and developing student leaders to champion environment conservation. We hope to become a Centre of Excellence in environment education by 2008.

We are committed to our mission of providing a challenging curriculum to enhance the capacity of our students with competencies and attitudes for the future. We hope that 2007 will be a year where we take a step closer towards our vision of being a choice school that nurtures world-ready citizens.

May 2007 be a fruitful year for all members of the Marsiling family!
